Sanji & Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy There are two things that annoy Sanji about Luffy, the first being the aspiring Kaizoku-oh's appetite. Luffy is constantly sneaking into Sanji's food stores during the night, eating the bait for fishing and eating other people's share of food! In fact, Sanji even wants to get a fridge with a lock on it in an attempt to keep the hungry Luffy at bay. Not only does Luffy raid the kitchen more than any normal human being should, but he also constantly harasses Sanji to cook him meals. Of course, since Sanji is a cook, it's not too much of a problem to drop what he's doing to whip up a snack but sometimes Luffy's timing is just absurd -- often causing Sanji's short fuse to be lit.

The other thing that annoys Sanji: Luffy's tendancy to be an airhead. Luffy is known for his... unique way of thinking and acting. He tends to act now, ask questions later. This is also a trait that Sanji shares (at least when it comes to fighting) but Luffy takes it one step further -- he doesn't pay a lot of attention to any given situation, be it fishing, talking about girls, someone giving important information to him... you name it. This sort of careless behaviour gets on Sanji's nerves. It's not that the cook is strict or anything. After all, he was one of the roudiest at Baratie. However, he doesn't understand how Luffy can act like such a dumbass all the time. In addition to this, Luffy can also be flat out annoying. A good example is when the Going Merry is arriving at an island and Luffy is patting Sanji hard on the back, repeating that they're almost there... and Sanji promptly kicks the rubberman in the head.

Luffy's antics often get an aggressive reaction out of Sanji. I think a number of fans may take this as Sanji thinking that Luffy is nothing more than an idiot. When the two first met, this was certainly Sanji's opinion of Luffy... a clumsy idiot of a waiter. However, his opinions of Luffy are soon changed after Luffy proverbially slaps Sanji in the face by telling him that Sanji will not be repaying his debt to Zeff, who saved his life, by dying. Zeff didn't risk his own life to save Sanji, just so the blonde could throw it all away for the older man's sake later on in life. Sanji doesn't understand Luffy as well as Zoro, but he does know that Luffy's more than what he seems. He knows that Luffy has the insight and instinct it takes to become the Pirate King.

Actually, Luffy and Sanji are more similar than they appear to be on the surface. Both share the same ambition to acheive their dreams and they both never back down from any challenges, no matter how small. More importantly, they share a similar inner child.. Luffy is the only one who was able to bring that youthful, excited Sanji out into the open after years of acting like a cold-hearted badass. All it took was willingly lending a listening ear as the chef talked about his dream of finding All Blue... and it also helps that Luffy was excited about it too, unlike all of the others that would have laughed in Sanji's face, should they have found out about such a "far-fetched" dream.
